Personal profile

ShortBio

Dr Ander Ramos a technical translational neurocientist with expertise in the design, development, testing and regulation of neurotechnology. At the moment he is responsible for two laboratories, one at the University of Tubingen, Germany and the other one at a private non-profit research center called Tecnalia in Spain. At the university he does more basic to applied/clinical science and in Tecnalia he works on applied science to market/clinical-practice ready neurotechnology. He studies systems neuroscience using their developed or implemented systems as tools to write and read from the nervous system at any level (Brain, Spine, Periphery), especially to induce and modulate functional neuroplasticity and mainly in the field of stroke neurorehabilitation. He is interested in human neurotechnology, brain-machine- or neural-interfaces, stroke rehabilitation, neural signal processing, bioelectronic medicine and transferring neuroscientific findings to market-/clinical-practice-ready neurotechnology. After his Batchellor in mechanical and Masters of Industrial Engineering at the University of Navarre, he was trained as a research engineer at Tecnalia thanks to the Iñaki-Goenaga fellowship designing biomedical devices for rehabilitation and surgery (2004-2006), while expanding his knowledge in parallel with his Biomed. Eng. Studies at the Technical University of Munich (2004-2007) and training at the neuroprosthetics group of the Klinikum Grosshadern (2004-2005) and at the robotics and mechatronics department of the German Aerospace Center (2005-2006) and at the Johns Hopkins University Brain-computer-Interfaces laboratory (2006-2007). His subsequent PhD training in Neuroscience with four on clinical Brain-Machine-Interface technology at the Max-Planck Graduate School of the University of Tübingen (2007-2011) allowed him to train extensively in adapting my technical skills to the clinical setting acquiring extensive experience in clinical trials. In parallel, he continued working for Tecnalia further developing his transfer to market profile in Neurotechnology working also for clients (industry). Following a Postdoc period, he became group leader (faculty) in the Institute of Medical Psychology and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Tübingen (2013), and in Tecnalia he was promoted to director of Neurotechnology in 2016. His research has been published in over 90 publications and has been recognized via a number of awards (e.g., the 2014 Germany Academy of Science Mainz, Young investigator Award; The World Federation of Neurorehabilitation award in 2015). He run 2 diverse laboratories that include upwards, 4 staff people, 10 graduate students, and 4 postdoctoral fellows who are involved in all aspects of the research process from low TRL to high TRL (Market-ready).
