Dr. Artzai Picon, Industrial Engineer (2002), M.Res. (2005) MSc. Biomedical Engineering (2012) and European PhD (2009) is principal investigator at Tecnalia In 2002 he received the Accenture award for best master's thesis and in 2006, the ONCE international research award. In 2009 he obtained his doctoral thesis laude in the field of artificial intelligence for the classification of hyperspectral images. In 2011 the industrial application of his thesis receives the 3rd European EARTO prize in innovation. In 2014 he is part of the group that receives the 1st European EARTO prize in innovation for a histological image characterization system. He has participated in numerous international research projects coordinating the PICCOLO project for the development of a new photonic endoscope.

He also contributes at an industrial level developing characterization/deep learning models for transnational companies such as ArcelorMittal or BASF under long-term private research contracts. He has published more than 50 indexed articles in the field of AI applied to image processing (H-21, +3400 citations), holds 21 European and international patents in the same field exploited by multinational companies and has collaborated with various media in scientific dissemination. He is also an associate professor at the UPV/EHU where he teaches the subject of perception systems in the Master's Degree in Automation and Robotics, is a member of the BIORES research group and has co-directed three doctoral theses and several master's thesis. In 2023 he has received the first BRTA (Basque Research & Technology Association) award for his research career.
