Personal profile

ShortBio

Carmen Alonso-Montes is a Computer Engineer (2003) and holds a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (2008) from the University of A Coruña. She has extensive research experience in computer vision techniques for critical systems in the petrochemical industry, renewable energies, and mobility for risk monitoring, defect identification, and maintenance activities. Throughout her career, she has participated in and led numerous publicly (Basque Government, MINECO, and Europe) and privately funded projects.

Her doctorate focused on defining computer vision solutions in SIMD embedded systems for critical environments. During this period, she collaborated with the University of Manchester (UK) thanks to predoctoral mobility grants from the Xunta de Galicia (2006, 2007). She continued her research at ESI-Tecnalia under the Torres Quevedo grant (2009-2012), specializing in IoT and product lines applied to various industries within national and international projects. After this period, she continued her postdoctoral career, first at IK4-Ideko (2012-2013) specializing in the machine tool sector, and then at BCAM (2013-2017) as a postdoctoral researcher specializing in developing artificial intelligence solutions for Alzheimer's and fluid dynamics simulations in the renewable energy sector. During this period, and thanks to the José Castillejo mobility grant (MECD), she was able to undertake a postdoctoral stay at KTH (Sweden). After this period, she began developing computer vision solutions within the industry, first at Begirale-Grupo Dominion (2017-2020) in critical environment surveillance and the petrochemical and railway sectors. Subsequently, thanks to the Bikaintek grant (2020-2021) at Alerion as a team leader, she developed the data analytics group for wind turbine blade maintenance. Later, as R&D director, she was responsible for defining the strategy within the wind energy and drone maintenance sector. Since 2023, she has been working at Tecnalia as a project director for Artificial Intelligence focused on industrial and defense projects.
