Javier Arcas obtained his degrees in Bilbao, Spain, a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering in the Industrial Engineering School in 1995 and a degree in the German REFA Association for work design, industrial organisation and company development in the Industrial Engineering School in 1995. Since 2009 he is a senior researcher in the Health Technologies Unit (Health Division) in TECNALIA Research & Innovation, Zamudio, Spain. His investigation has dealt with interactive robotic platforms for assistive services to disabled people, creating interfaces with serious games in embedded devices, tele-rehabilitation web interfaces for mild cognitive impairment and ictus recovery, interactive interfaces for psychological therapy including multi-videoconference, and mobile interfaces for visual impaired people. He has applied augmented reality to provide new ways of interaction to elderly and cognitive impairment people. He has worked in the MyAuthor project, an authoring tool to create mobile multiplatform AR applications to guide elderly people and people with cognitive disabilities during the use of home and industrial appliances control panels. Another research field resides in the development of “Internet-of-things” software frameworks in order to achieve a pervasive, transparent information environment for the benefit of elderly people. In particular, he has collaborated in the development of the SALAD framework, a multi-purpose middleware integrating different protocols and gathering data for post-process analysis in order to infer user’s behaviour and monitor risk situations. SALAD has been integrated in the BUTLER European Union FP7 project with the purpose of enabling the development of secure and smart life assistant applications. He has also participated in the development of the Equimetrix system, a platform for balance assessment and fall prevention that integrates sensors for the measurement of balance parameters with serious 2D and 3D games for the user evaluation and training. This system has been integrated in the projects ACTIVAGE (ACTivating InnoVative IoT smart living environments for AGEing well, HORIZON 2020), and FALCO (Frailty Corner, Elkartek, Basque Government, Spain). Subsequently, he has collaborated in projects with application of sensorised exoskeletons, such as FEXO (AZIENDA REGIONALE CENTRALE CENTRALE ACQUISTI, Italy, 2018), where a robotic exoskeleton combined with FES signals is proposed for motor rehabilitation in neurological patients with upper limb motor deficits. Another project is EXOSASUN (Hazitek 2020, Basque Government, Spain), research into new generation exoskeletons for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace, with sensorisation using EMG and movement analysis, applying artificial intelligence for the prevention of occupational injuries. He is currently collaborating on projects related to functional electrostimulation and data intelligence, managing storage systems, protocols for the creation of APIs, analysis algorithms and visualisation systems for the end user.
