Abstract

A fully integrated voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) which fulfills restrictive phase-noise requirements is designed. The VCO can be designed only if the LC tank circuit is properly designed. In the first stage a good quality tank circuit, based on a balanced inductor and a PN junction varactor, is designed. It is found that the phase noise and oscillation frequency meet the reqirements for a DCS-1800 direct conversion receiver.
