Abstract
Coagulation process is widely used in potable and wastewater treatment. The most used coagulants in water purification are iron and aluminium salts. At the moment, products based on prehydrolized forms of aluminium can be more effective than traditional coagulants are being used, but their mechanism of coagulation is very complicated and it is not much studied. The objective of this work is determine the aluminium species formed in aqueous solutions to know what species are formed and which are the ones that act as coagulants. For this proposal, the following techniques have been used: UV-Vis Spectroscopy, 27A1-NMR Spectroscopy, IR Spectroscopy and Size Exclusion Chromatography, as well as jartest assays. By analyzing the obtained data the properties of coagulants with their way of operation are correlated.
