Abstract

Experimental study of dynamic behavior of Squeeze Film Dampers (SFDs) is fundamental for its rotordynamic analysis and future validation of numerical predictions. This work presents the dynamic response of the fluid film on a Squeeze Film Damper under circular orbit excitations. The test rig employs an adjustable cam to impose orbits to the journal. The dynamic forces are measured on the test bearing housing by load cells and displacements are measured in the journal by two proximity probes. Journal whirling excitation is synchronous to rotating speed. Tests are conducted at various rotating speeds up to 2500 RPM. Results show the dynamic coefficients of the SFD at different bearing length to diameter relationships and various orbit eccentricities. The results of this work prove the suitability of the test rig to identify the synchronous response of Squeeze Film Dampers.
