    Abstract

Under certain conditions, welding of forged flanges in materials of grade SA‐182 (F‐317L) may lead to lamellar tearing. This problem, which appears during the fabrication stage, cannot be detected in advance by the usual acceptance tests and in order to avoid its occurrence it would be necessary to carry out final heat treatment at temperatures above those so far stipulated in the relevant Standard. Further, under certain service conditions, the corrosion behaviour of the material might also prove inadequate.
