Abstract

Our society is driven by digital services, empowered through embedded systems (ESs) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Chapter 2 provided several aspects of digitization, and reported from a recent McKinsey study analyzing the technology potential of automation (Chui et al., 2016). The main conclusion of the study was that more than half of the working time of employees in the United States has high potential for automation, between 64% for data collection and 78% for predicable physical work. Thus, the question is not if, but when, automation will enter the various domains.
