Abstract
Samples of nominal composition SmxFe100-x(10 < x < 50) were prepared by mechanical alloying starting from pure elements. The phase distribution, thermal stability and hysteretic properties of the samples were studied by using X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry and magnetometric techniques, respectively. The so obtained results make evident that the as-milled material is formed essentially by a mixture of an amorphous Sm-Fe phase and a-Fe, the relative amount of amorphous phase being larger for larger Sm contents. Upon crystallization of the amorphous phase coerci vities of the order of 0.7 T were developed.
