Abstract

Nowadays and in the future, the capacity of being able to use the latest means of interaction has become a critical factor not only to increase earnings but also to stay in the market. The objective of this paper is to present a strategy for becoming and staying interoperable in SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) environments. SMEs used to be flexible, adaptable and innovative in their products, but they have difficulties to adopt ICT in disciplines not directly related with their products. This strategy relays in three pillars: an Improvement Cycle to guide the establishment and the maintenance of the interoperable status; An Interoperability Maturity Model as a repository of good practices for being interoperable; An Assessment Method to be able to measure the level of interoperability and being able to establish feasible goals.
