Abstract

Some of the significant factors that need to be considered for surface inspection of hot rolled seamless tube, are discussed. Some surface marks and other defects can take place into the laminated seamless tubes during hot rolling process because of wear of the roll stands. A seamless tube manufacturer in Spain has implemented a new automatic inspection technology to detect surface defects. The manufacturer installed the automatic inspection system at the exit of the push bench, at a place where defects can take place. The automatic system is capable of inspecting the whole surface of the tubes in real time under various environmental conditions caused due to dirt, vapor, and high temperatures. The automatic system also has an intelligent classification software tool based on support vector machine to recognize any defects.
