Abstract

Connection of winfarms to the main grid through an HVDC transmission system has many technological advantages that can help increase the amount of wind power connected in a system. The high cost of the power converters in HVDC systems is the main drawback that is holding back the use of HVDC in wind farms. HVDC systems are usually Point to Point connections but multi point connections of wind farms to a common HVDC cable can reduce the cost of new windframs. An alternative to conventional HVDC connection of wind farms to reduce the cost of the HVDC system is presented. The wind turbines may be directly connected to the HVDC line and the need for the costly Offshore HVDC VSC converter station is overridden.
