Doctoral thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

The Small Punch test consists in punching a small plate until fracture. Currently, it is becoming an alternative to conventional tests, especially in those cases where there is a limited amount of material to be tested. In this thesis, the applicability of the Small Punch test for the mechanical characterization of metallic materials exposed to high temperatures has been analyzed. Once its adequacy to identify changes on the material after exposure to high temperatures has been proven, the technique has been applied to estimate the mechanical properties at high temperatures. Several methodologies have been employed, in order to obtain the creep properties of materials with high and low ductility. Furthermore, the influence of different factors on the results has been analyzed. This research improves the understanding of the testing technique, contributing to the attainment of similar results between different laboratories and the acceptance of the Small Punch test by the industry.
