Resumen

The effects of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation on the bulk electric system (BES) are varied and dependent on the grid network's conditions, including the resource mix and system uncertainties. As the grid evolves, characterizing the change in capacity contribution of each renewable resource is of vital importance in preparing for the reliability of the future grid. This research explores the capacity contribution of solar and wind units located in Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)'s footprint for the resource mix between years 2031 and 2041. Several existing methods and the novel direct loss of load (DLOL) method were used to estimate the capacity contribution of solar PV and wind resources. The results were compared to capture the shifts in risk as the resource mix evolves. We also highlight the conditions of the BES that will influence the capacity contribution of renewable generation by examining the hours of high risk and probability of loss of load.
