Hot pressing of sintered-metal friction materials for railways braking applications

Producción científica: Capítulo del libro/informe/acta de congresoContribución a la conferenciarevisión exhaustiva

Resumen

Sintered-metal friction components are particularly useful for heavy-duty applications, e.g. high-speed train brakes. A very complex powder blend (up to 15 components) is conventionally fabricated by a three-step process. The presence of abrasives, lubricants and graphite restrict the final density and porosity obtained However, alternative Hot Pressing can provide in only one-step process higher density, improvement of the microstructure and improved performance. In the present research, the influence of hot-pressing parameters (temperature and pressure) on the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of copper based friction materials for high-speed train braking applications has been studied. Two different compositions based on industrial formulations were prepared for this study. Due to the presence of very heterogeneous components in the powder blends, this study was complemented with the application of granulation, by using different binders, to get homogenous blends with higher flowability that even produces improved microstructures and braking performance.
