Resumen

Laser-assisted machining process has been successfully applied on different materials, and the most extended application is in Inconel 718. To get best process parameters is necessary a comprehensive analysis of temperature distribution in the cutting area, so thermal field simulation becomes key point to achieve good results. The study of the temperature field and the final results of the process can be approached through three types of methodologies or models that can be combined: an experimental model, a numerical model, or an analytical model. The modeling of the energy source is a key aspect for the correct estimation of the thermal field and the evaluation of the new material properties enhanced with the temperature in the heat-affected zone. Typically, the processes that use a laser beam as energy source are classified into high-penetration processes and low-penetration processes. The most common high-penetration processes are laser welding and laser cutting.
