Resumen
The magnetic moulding process is based on the same moulding concept as the full mould process better known under the generic name of "Lost Foam"process. In the magnetic moulding process, the unbonded sand used in the "Lost Foam" process is replaced by steel shot, to which a magnetic field is applied during the pouring and solidification of the metal. This means that the shot mould is mechanically consolidated not by a chemical binder, as in conventional processes, but by the magnetic forces between the steel pellets in the magnetic field. The magnetic mould thus combines the main advantages of the chill mould and of the "Lost Foam" process. This article presents the major parameters of the process and discusses its main advantages and limitations with respect to the moulding processes commonly used in the foundry.
