Sintering and extrusion of an Al-14Si-2.5Cu-0.5Mg P/M alloy

Resumen

The liquid phase sintering (LPS) and subsequent hot extrusion behaviour of a P/M Al-Si alloy were studied. Green compacts were pressed at 400 and 500 MPa attaining density values of 86 and 89%TD, respectively. During LPS, the liquid generation was analysed by DSC, while the microstructural development was followed by quenching experiments from selected temperatures. Sintering was carried out at 550 and 575°C for 1 h in nitrogen. Optimal sintering occurred at 575°C, reaching a density of 98%TD and a hardness of 83 HRF. Sintered samples were extruded in air at 388, 437, and 480°C using an extrusion ratio R=16. The extruded specimens were almost fully dense for any pressing and sintering condition. Additionally, the samples previously sintered at the lower temperature exhibited a finer distribution of Si particles and a slightly higher hardness. Microstructural characterization of the samples was carried out by optical microscopy, SEM, and XRD.
